Uganda Stove Manufacturers Limited (UGASTOVE) is a pioneering Ugandan company based in Kampala that manufactures and distributes energy-efficient, improved cookstoves.
Their mission is to improve the social and economic conditions of the urban poor while fighting deforestation and the health issues caused by indoor air pollution.
Here is a breakdown of what makes them a significant player in Uganda's clean energy sector:
The Product
In Uganda, the majority of the population relies on biomass (wood and charcoal) for cooking. Traditional open fires and basic metallic stoves are highly inefficient and release dangerous amounts of smoke.
UGASTOVE produces brightly colored stoves that combine a durable metallic outer case with a specialized insulating clay liner. This design traps heat and directs it efficiently to the cooking pot.
Fuel Efficiency: The design reduces charcoal or wood consumption by 35% to 50% compared to traditional cooking methods.
Cost Savings: Lower fuel consumption saves families an average of $70 per year — a significant amount for low-income households.
Health and Environment: They drastically cut down on harmful indoor smoke and help slow Uganda's severe deforestation rates.
Carbon Finance Business Model
Manufacturing high-quality stoves is expensive, which typically prices out the poorest households. UGASTOVE solved this by registering as a carbon finance project.
Because their stoves directly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the company earns carbon credits. UGASTOVE uses the revenue from selling these credits to subsidize the retail price of the stoves, mechanize their production lines, and fund community social responsibility programs.
Key Milestones
Early Beginnings
1980s
Started as a small family business by the Kawere family, making traditional pots and metallic stoves to sell in local markets.
Pilot Project
2005
The Urban Community Development Association (UCODEA) ran a pilot project funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop a market for improved stoves.
Official Incorporation
2006-2007
UGASTOVE was officially registered as a business. They won an award from the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA), allowing them to build a modern kiln and transition into a formal factory.
Scaling Up
Present
Currently, the company distributes 8,000 to 9,000 stoves monthly throughout Uganda.
